Plans for 2014 Gay Games opening ceremony announced; 'emotion and pageantry' promised

CLEVELAND - The 2014 Gay Games will kick off in Cleveland on August 9 with an expected 8,000 to 10,000 participants competing in some 40 sports.

The Opening Ceremonies for the games will be held at Quicken Loans Arena on will be produced by Patrick Roberge Productions Inc. (PRP).

“We are going to rock the games with a ceremony filled with emotion and pageantry," says Patrick Roberge, president of PRP in a news release.

PRP is an award-winning show and content producer with more than 25 years of experience presenting high-profile international events, including the 100th Grey Cup, the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games and the Opening Ceremony of the 122nd Session of the International Olympic Committee. 

“We will feature the parade of athletes, the raising of the Rainbow Flag, as well as spectacular production numbers representing the region’s rich culture, talent and diversity. Cleveland+Akron will welcome the world to Ohio. We look forward to producing a ceremony that fosters an atmosphere where all are welcomed and celebrated,” said Roberge.

On Friday Feb. 21 a kick-off event was held at The Rink at Wade Oval in University Circle, featuring performances by local skating professionals including Frank Singley, a former Gay Games champion who is participating in the games this year.

The Opening Ceremony for the 2014 Gay Games will kick off at Quicken Loans Arena.
Participants will gather in nearby Progressive Field between 4 and 6 p.m. to meet old and new friends, have pre-party fun before organizing to march into Quicken Loans Arena.

At 7 p.m., the program will begin with production numbers with guest artists, dancers, cheerleaders, the 2014 Gay Games community chorus and team marching band, followed by the formal welcome speeches, the raising of the Rainbow Flag and the administration of the pledge taken by all participants.
