CLEVELAND -- What does it take to build the tallest, fastest coaster on the planet?
NewsChannel5's Linda Passariello got an all-access look at Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster (pictured, left). The Top Thrill Dragster dwarfs all other coasters in the world by more than 100 feet. It is expected to be ready on Cedar Point's opening day, which is May 4.And it's no small feat to build."We were fearful that winter weather winds and snow would hamper working in that elevation. [We] had a lot of [windy] days and [snowy] days that could've created lot of problems," said Monty Jasper, V.P. of maintenance and new construction at Cedar Point.Crews work 420 feet high atop the crest of the ride. Since last winter, about 200 workers along with huge cranes have been working year round to bolt the 40-foot steel sections together. In less than 90 days, six trains will be on the tracks ready to launch riders from zero to 120 mph in 4 seconds."The thrill you get from falling is just incredible, and the same thing's going to happen with this ride. [The] adrenaline rush is going to be so intense," said Carole Sanderson, president of American Coaster Enthusiasts. The construction crew is busy getting the coaster built. But folks at the park aren't worried. They said they're right on track to unveil the world's tallest coaster and cash in on the curious coaster crowds. The $24 million ride will undergo about a month of testing.
