CLEVELAND -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is opening an annex in New York City and Memphis. The New York annex will be in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood, NewsChannel5 reported. It's the first time the hall of fame is expanding outside of Cleveland. The people who run it said there's enough to go around. When it opened in 1995, it helped rebuild the city's image and increase tourism. Every year, the rock hall pumps $107 million into Cleveland. Millions of people may travel world round to see it, but it holds a large part in northeast Ohio's heart. The rock hall lowered prices for northeast Ohio residents, and last year the number of local people visiting doubled. Many hesitate to share it, while others fear it's a step toward the city losing it. Officials said the hall isn't going anywhere. "Cleveland is the centerpiece of what we do. Cleveland is the home of rock and roll. This is an opportunity to leverage partnerships we have in NYC and Memphis, build up Cleveland, not take away from it," said Todd Mesek with the rock hall.Mesek points to the construction of a new library and archives building on the campus of Tri-C that proves the hall of fame is in Cleveland to stay. New York City's rock hall annex opens in November. The 25,000-square-foot space will house Bruce Springsteen's 1957 Chevy and will feature a number of different exhibits, including one featuring New York City-based sites that have musical significance. The annex in Memphis opens in late 2009.
