'Coach' Star Talking About Liver Transplant

Fabares Finally Getting Energy After 2 Years

POSTED: 5:01 p.m. EDT September 3, 2002

"Coach" star Shelley Fabares is talking publicly about a liver condition that nearly killed her.

Shelley FabaresAuto-immune hepatitis had ruined her liver and it took her nearly two years to get a transplant. By the time she got the operation she was bedridden and so weak she could hardly stay awake.

Now, almost two years later, her energy is just starting to return. She still doesn't have much stamina.

"Coach" fans would hardly recognize Fabares today. Her hair is short, spiky -- and streaked with fuchsia.

Fabares played Christine Armstrong Fox on the show, who married Coach Hayden Fox (Craig T. Nelson.) The series ran from 1989 to 1997.

Fabares, who's in her late 50s, also played Mary Stone on "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1963, and starred opposite Elvis Presley in the movies "Girl Happy," "Spinout" and "Clambake."

She's been married to "M*A*S*H" star Mike Farrell since 1984.
