Professor Wrestling: TNA 'Turning Point' Results

Hall, Nash, Discontent

POSTED: 12:13 am EST November 29, 2007
UPDATED: 11:08 pm EST December 2, 2007

Listen up!

Class is in session.

TNA's "Turning Point" is history, with former WWE/WCW stars Scott Hall and Kevin Nash returning to pay-per-view land after all these years. They teamed up with Samoa Joe to take on a heel team led by former WWE star Kurt Angle. Turning Point? Sounds more like Been There, Done That. But I'm not here to complain. I'm here to inform and educate.

Podcast: Episode 56

With that in mind, below is what I thought SHOULD happen in the big matches (written, of course, before the show started) , followed by what WILL happen (again, penned before the show) -- and then what DID happen. The entire package is a time-tested entertaining way for you to see what a genius I am in trying to predict how scripted tumbling will unfold. Like you have anything better to do.

Challenge Match: Eric Young vs. James Storm
What Should Happen: After Storm lost to Young in an impromptu beer drinking contest, he smashed a bottle into his forehead. Poor drunken loser! Seconds later, this match was made. Poor drunken viewer!

What Will Happen: I've never liked the "dumb guy" character in wrestling, which Young portrays. I hope he loses, but he won't.

What Did Happen: That Jimmy Storm can't get a break. The babyface doofus Young won.

Challenge Match: Booker T and Kaz vs. Christian Cage and Robert Roode
What Should Happen: Look out kids, this one could be the unexpected barnburner for your pay-per-view dollar. Booker T is new to the promotion, Kaz is getting a huge push, Christian is probably feeling a bit left out with all the new talent coming in and Roode -- who has been there forever -- should want to show how he belongs in the top tier. If TNA management had any brains at all, it would order these four to have a four-star match or hit the bricks.

What Will Happen: I like the good-guy team of Booker and Kaz to take it.

What Did Happen: Booker pinned Christian for the team babyface win.

TNA Women's Championship: Gail Kim (c) vs. Awesome Kong
What Should Happen: For a lady grappler, Awesome Kong is pretty awesome. I have the feeling TNA will copy WWE and crown a women's champion the locker room actually fears. I'd let Kong run amok.

What Will Happen: Awesome Kong will end Gail Kim's inaugural TNA title reign.

What Did Happen: Awesome Kong went and got herself disqualified for being a bit too rough on Ms. Kim. It's only a matter of time.

Feast Or Fired Match
What Should Happen: Here, 15 TNA performers hit the ring. The way I understand it, there are four suitcases in various corners of the six-sided ring. Grab a suitcase, and you win the mystery prize inside. One suitcase holds a contract for a TNA World Championship match. Another suitcase holds a contract for an X-Division title tilt. A third suitcase promises a TNA Tag Team Championship match. The fourth suitcase? A pink slip. A one-way ticket to the TNA unemployment line. It's a nice gimmick match, actually. It allows a bunch of guys to get primo TV time, with something on the line.

What Will Happen: Gazing into my crystal ball, I'll make three predictions: Big Poppa Pump will win the singles title match. Christopher Daniels will win the X-Division chance. Rick Steiner will get the pink slip.

What Did Happen: This was an outrage. The suitcases were taken (by Steiner, Petey Williams, B.G. James and Senshi) but we have to wait until the next edition of TNA "Impact!" to find out who won what. Bad business, TNA. You don't force the paying customers to watch the free TV show. THAT'S HIGHWAY ROBBERY!

Tables Match: Team 3D and Johnny Devine vs. Jay Lethal and Chris Sabin and Alex Shelly
What Should Happen: Team 3D wants to destroy the X-Division for some reason. That's why cruiserweight stars Lethal, Sabin and Shelly will shine here. At least, they should shine. To have this be a squash match for Ray, Devon and Devine would be idiotic. TNA has to get on track with its groundbreaking, hallmark X-Division, or else close down shop.

What Will Happen: Lethal, Sabin and Shelly will win, and steal the show.

What Did Happen: Team 3D won. No show stolen. Yawn. Another dumb TNA move.

10,000 Tacks Match: Abyss and Rhino vs. Black Reign and Rellik
What Should Happen: Ah, nothing says Christmas like a good bloodletting among testosterone-filled beasts. Oh wait, that might be the Good Friday show. At any rate, I guess these goofs will 'rassle among little sharp objects and get all gory. And yes, you're supposed to say "cool" when you realize that Rellik is "killer" spelled backwards. Diputs.

What Will Happen:Abyss and Rhino will prevail in this tacky tag match.

What Did Happen: Raven replaced Rhino in this blood-fest, as he and Abyss bested Black Reign and Rellik.

Challenge Match: Kurt Angle, Tyson Tomko and A.J. Styles vs. Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Samoa Joe
What Should Happen: Do fans still want to see Hall and Nash in the ring together? Or has their time passed? I'm not sure. If these two WCW dinosaurs can tell a story in the ring, great. If they're just wandering around aimlessly like The Great Khali, this could be brutal. What should happen? You have to let Hall give Styles the old Razor's Edge for the pin.

What Will Happen: Nash, Hall and Joe will find a way to win.

What Did Happen: I'd wager a zillion dollars that this was an angle, but Scott Hall didn't show up for the match. Eric Young subbed for Hall, and the babyface team won -- with Samoa Joe getting the pin over Tomko. Uh, you might want to think really hard before ordering the replay on this one.

That's it. TNA's "Turning Point" is history. For the night, I made nine predictions, and got five right. That's better than 50 percent in my book -- again cementing my claim as one of the greatest sports entertainment prophets on the planet. Thanks for not arguing the point. You wouldn't win anyway.

Speaking of winners, you can't go wrong by downloading Episode 56 of "Old School, New School" -- the Professor Wrestling podcast. This week, my co-hosts Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire tackle Booker T's move to TNA and sound off on the return of Chris Jericho and Edge to WWE. Get the goods by downloading the show RIGHT HERE. How do you listen to shows 1 through 55? Easy. Just click onto the "Podcast Page" in the sidebar above.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
