Promoting Book Helps Gerald Levert's Father Cope With Loss

Eddie Levert, of the O'Jays, finds promoting a book he co-authored with his late son, Gerald Levert, therapeutic.

During an interview with NewsChannel5's Lee Jordan, Levert said the book tour to promote "I Got Your Back" was all part of a plan that he and Gerald had and he wants to continue with that plan. He will be at a book signing at Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Legacy Village at 7 p.m. Thursday.

"We go on and we go on through the book and through the music and helping each other and loving each other," he said.

Gerald Levert, an R&B star, died in November of a deadly mixture of over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

Sean Levert, Eddie's son who is also making appearance with his father for the book, said that the family is handling the death "pretty good."

"You hear certain things on the TV or you might see something or hear a song that will remind you of him," Sean Levert said. "I think it's still gonna be there because it was such a big loss."

The inspiration for the book came after Gerald and Eddie remade "Wind Beneath My Wings." The song, he said, was well received by many and the other author of the book, Lyah Leflore, thought the Leverts had a story that they should share with the world.

In the book, Eddie Levert said he deals with the importance of family.

"The message beyond the lights and beyond the stage presence and all of that -- the one thing that we are is family," Levert said. "And the one thing that we have to do as fathers and sons and mothers and daughters is keep communicating. Keep talking. Keep putting it on the table and you can finally come to a solution with any situation with the family."

Levert added that it is important to provide for your family, but admitted he missed the "simpler things" in life while his children were growing up, such as his daughter's first date and parent-teacher conferences.

Levert is also promoting a CD, "Something to Talk About."
