CLEVELAND -- A new plan to help turn around Cleveland's most struggling elementary schools was announced Friday. The team effort to help the schools will involve the schools' CEO, the teacher's union, retired principals and parents.Cleveland Schools CEO Eugene Sanders said 10 of the district's lowest-performing schools, called turnaround schools, will immediately get extra attention to improve reading and math skills.Turnaround schools are schools that have not met adequate yearly progress for more than five years. The schools on the list are A.B. Hart, A.J. Rickoff, Audubon, Buhrer, Carl and Louis Stokes Central Academy, Joseph M. Gallagher, Luis Munoz Marin, Nathan Hale, Patrick Henry and Wilbur Wright. The new plan calls for retired principals and teachers to coach current principals and teachers in those schools, more parental support groups and extra tutoring. The district would like to see more parents get involved. Just seeing their own parents read books around the home can inspire children. If the schools do not improve within a year and a half, federal law allows the superintendent to either close those schools or replace the principals and teachers.
