CLEVELAND -- After the shootings at SuccessTech, officials promised metal detectors in every Cleveland school building, and this week school leaders started making good on that promise.Seven schools now have new walk-through metal detectors, some with X-ray machines, and the district says the installation will be an ongoing process until every school has them.East Tech is one of the first schools to get the new security hardware. An X-ray machine and three brand new walk-through metal detectors await students and visitors who enter the building."Personally, I wish it didn't have to be this way, but you do what you have to do to maintain a safe, secure environment," said campus administrator Dale Laux.Lincoln West, Success Tech and Margaret Ireland also have similar set-ups. Glenville, Kennedy and John Marshall just have the walk-through detectors.Enrollment, school location and both on- and off-site incident data determined which school would get the hardware first."We're looking to put the next seven schools on board, some starting next week, but there's no final completion date. This is an ongoing process," said Capt. Lamont Dodson, with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The new security system has been up and running at East Tech since Monday, and Laux said it is going well."We haven't confiscated anything so they know they can't get things in," he said. The total cost of all the hardware is about $4 million. The state kicked in more than half of that amount.
