STREETSBORO, Ohio - A truck spilled hydrochloric acid on the Ohio Turnpike Tuesday night, shutting down lanes near Interstate 480 in Streetsboro. The accident occurred in the westbound lanes, but police initially shut down both directions of the Turnpike because crews needed to clean up 39,000 gallons of the acid.
All lanes of traffic have reopened, as the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Hazmat worked through the night to clean up the spill.
Troopers say the driver hauling the acid fell asleep and flipped the truck off the road near the I-480 and I-80 interchange. The fluid carried by the trucker had a 10 percent mixture of the acid.
The driver, 46, of Ohio City, was able to remove himself from the wreckage and did not appear to have any serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Police evacuated 20 homes nearby as a precaution. Those residents have been allowed to re-enter their homes.
