COLUMBUS, Ohio - The State Highway Patrol said it was a deadlier New Year's weekend on Ohio roadways.

Troopers said Tuesday that crashes killed 13 people in the state from Friday through Monday. That's up from 10 fatalities during a similar period one year ago.

The patrol said nearly half the recent victims were not wearing seat belts. Col. John Born, the highway patrol's superintendent, said in a statement that buckling up is the best way to be protected in an accident.

"Between buckling-up and driving sober, far too many of these fatal crashes are preventable," explained Born.

None of the fatal crashes were in northeast Ohio. Most happened in southwestern portion of the state.

Franklin County posted the highest number of traffic-related incidents, with 595. Portage, Lorain and Summit counties also made the list.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
