MANSFIELD, Ohio - Interstate 71 southbound north of state Route 13 in Richland County is back open after a 21-car crash Monday afternoon.
The Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said snow caused limited visibility while road conditions became slippery at about 2 p.m.
All three lanes of traffic were backed up and one semi-truck wasn’t able to slow down in time. That truck hit another semi-tractor starting the chain reaction, troopers said. Sgt. Mike Roth said the cause of the crash were vehicles following too close, but it remains under investigation.
Some people complained of minor injuries, but troopers said no one was transported by EMS.
Five different towing companies were called in to help clear the scene. One lane of traffic was back open at about 4:15 p.m. and the scene was completely cleared around 5 p.m.
NewsChannel5 viewer Zack Baker shot video of the crash, which appeared to have 20+ vehicles involved.
