AKRON - An early-morning accident along Interstate 77 south in Akron killed one person and left a portion of that highway closed for several hours.

Akron police said that a semi-truck hit an SUV that was traveling the wrong way on I-77 just before 4 a.m. The male driver of the SUV, a Nissan Xterra, was killed in the crash and pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Summit County medical examiner.

I-77S closed at Vernon Odom Boulevard, and was closed throughout the morning. Crews finally cleared the scene around 9 a.m.

The driver of the semi-truck was transported to the hospital, but police said his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Police have not released the name of the victim. We will continue to update the story as we receive more information.
