CLEVELAND - The name of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team was the brainchild of a fan who will get special recognition for his winning contest entry in 1970.
Jerry Tomko, now 68 and retired in San Diego, said the name Cavaliers appealed to him because it signified fearless men who never surrender.
Tomko’s entry was among more than 11,000 in a contest Cavaliers founder Nick Mileti orchestrated with The Plain Dealer newspaper in February 1970.
Tomko got season tickets but not the autographed game ball that he requested. Now the Cavs are preparing to give him a certificate of recognition and an autographed game ball.
