AKRON, Ohio - Medina's great softball season came to an end at Firestone Stadium in Akron on Friday with a 5-2 loss to North Canton Hoover in the Division I State Semifinals.
Hoover, the defending state champ, will wait to play the winner of Elyria and Lebanon for the state championship Saturday night. Medina, who was making their first trip to the state tournament, ended their season at 24-5.
After the game’s start was delayed by two hours because of rain, the Vikings scored twice in the first for a 2-0 lead. Hoover took command of today’s semifinal with a three-run top of the fourth, which gave the Vikings a 5-0 lead. Medina answered back with two run in the bottom of the fourth.
Hoover (29-3) is seeking a second straight state title this weekend and a sixth state title overall. That would tie the Vikings with Hoban, Hillsdale and Strasburg for the third-most state softball championships in Ohio history. Springfield (nine) and Tallmadge (seven) lead the way with the most state titles.
Hoover advances to the Division I championship game on Saturday to play Lebanon who defeated Elyria 3-1.
