CLEVELAND - With only 85 days until the first Saturday in May the first of three different wagering pools to be offered this year opened Friday for this year's Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. The three pools will run Friday - Sunday, with pool 1 closing Sunday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. The wagering pool schedule is as follows:
Pool 1, Feb. 8-10 (12 weeks in advance), Pool 2, March 1-3 (9 weeks in advance), Pool 3, March 22-24 (6 weeks in advance)
In 2012, the three combined early wagering pools for the Kentucky Derby took in an estimated $1,470,019 with the Kentucky Oaks combined pools bringing in $92,476.
Both wagering pools for the Derby and the Oaks include 24 different wagering selections of 23 subjective horses and a "Mutual Field" known as "All Others."
Last year's Kentucky Derby winner "I'll Have Another" early wagering pool paid $60.20 in Pool 1, $46.20 in Pool 2, and $45.60 in Pool 3 for a $2 wager. On the day of the Kentucky Derby, he paid $32.60 for a $2 bet.
So who's on the "Hot List" for this year's Kentucky Derby? Photographer Dave Hatala and I have been tracking these horses since last year, and while we do have some personal favorites Todd Pletcher trained horses "Shanghai Bobby," winner of the Champagne and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, along with "Violence" who is expected to run in the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 23, are among the fan favorites. However, the "All Others" mutual field is getting most of the wagering with odds of 9-5. "Shanghai Bobby and Violence" have current odds at 12-1.
Early wagering for these pools can be done at Thistledown this weekend.
