CLEVELAND - The horses have been arriving daily at Churchill Downs and are busy completing final workouts before Kentucky Derby 138 takes place on May 5th.
Who will have what it takes to complete the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Derby?
Union Rags, a leading contender for this year's race is trained by Michael Matz and is the son of Dixie Union. Matz trained Barbaro at Keeneland in 2006 prior to winning the Kentucky Derby that year. Union Rags also trained at Keeneland and had a workout on April 20, in 47:40. He is now at Churchill Downs where he will have his final work out.
Wood Memorial runner-up Alpha is still in New York and has been receiving additional gate training at Belmont Park. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin hopes this will improve his colts behavior since having issues in the gate during the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November of last year at Churchill. Alpha will breeze at Belmont on Saturday and fly to Churchill on Monday where he will be given extra attention if needed.
Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy has been training in Palm Meadows, Florida. He looks good and jockey Calvin Borel (Bo-rail) will take the mount on this one. Indy had 5F in 1:00:04 on Thursday.
Daddy Nose Best has been galloping over the Churchill track. His work out was slow.
