Will Cleveland Browns Stadium become 'FirstEnergy Field'? Printed Wilson footballs say yes

CLEVELAND - Cleveland Browns Stadium may soon be getting a new name, and the talk of it is 'sparking’ conversations in northern Ohio.

A source who claims to be connected with the Wilson Football plant in Ada, Ohio, told NewsChannel5 that the company made footballs for the Browns with the name “FirstEnergy Field at Cleveland Browns Stadium” on them.

The source said about 60 footballs were manufactured and shipped out last Thursday. Wilson, located in Hardin County, is the official manufacturer of footballs for the National Football League.

And late Monday, our news partner -- the Akron Beacon Journal -- reported there will be an event Tuesday at 2 p.m. to announce the naming rights for the stadium. The Browns confirmed the announcement Tuesday morning.

However, neither the team nor FirstEnergy are talking about the possibility of the stadium being renamed.

“If you are referring to an earlier report from today, we do not have a comment on that,” said Neal Gulkis, a spokesman for the Browns.

FirstEnergy offered information about its connections to Cleveland sports teams.

“FirstEnergy has been a proud supporter of civic, arts and professional sports organizations throughout the company’s service area, which extends across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey. In Ohio, we’ve long championed Cleveland teams with prominent sponsorships at Browns Stadium, Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena,” said Todd Schneider, spokesman for FirstEnergy. “While we remain committed to partnering with local community leaders and businesses to make our communities attractive places to live and work, we have no new announcements regarding any major sponsorships at this time.”

NewsChannel5 reporter Kristin Volk stopped by Slyman's Deli in Cleveland to see what the lunch crowd suggested for a new stadium name.

"Slyman's Reuben Stadium, there we go," said Allen Ross of Warrensville Heights, a die-hard Browns fan who would like the stadium named after the popular deli's signature sandwich on the near east side.

"Lake Erie Stadium," said Ross' grandmother Veronica Ross, who wasn't in favor of changing the stadium's name.

"Why not Phil Dawson Stadium," asked Dan McCarthy of Avon Lake. Or, "Screw You Art Modell Stadium?" "There's so much history. There's so much history with the team. The Cleveland Browns Stadium just says it all."

At the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Ohio City, Jan Huter of Portage County suggested the "North Coast Stadium."

"Let's embrace the water," Huter added.

If money were no object, life-long Cleveland-area resident and Browns fan Larry Schrader said he'd like the stadium named after him.

"If it gets named after me, I might even buy a season ticket," said Schrader of Strongsville.
