CLEVELAND - Browns General Manager Tom Heckert and Head Coach Pat Shurmur will be fired following Sunday's game in Pittsburgh according to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer Saturday night.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer reported the news citing league sources that the pair will be fired or part ways with the team by Monday. There has been no official announcement from the Browns who are preparing to play the Steelers on Sunday.
Pat Shurmur lasted just two seasons in Cleveland and produced a record of 9-22 heading into Sunday's game. Browns new owner Jimmy Haslam hired CEO Joe Banner to oversee the operation. Team President Mike Holmgren left the team earlier in December.
Shurmur was quoted earlier this week when asked about his body of work and getting ready for this final game of the season with the swirling speculation surrounding the team.
"Listen, I get this, and my concerns are for my team and making sure that we do all the right things during the game to give our guys the best chance to win,'' said Shurmur, who heads in with a 9-22 record. "That’s where I’m at. We have not won enough football games, and I know that’s the way this things works, but in our situation I see improvement and I’ll leave it at that.''
