BEREA, Ohio - At this point of the year, Jim Tressel is used to spending time in summer training camps. But it's normally his own camp.
Without a camp to run this year, however, the former Ohio State coach paid a visit to the Cleveland Browns practice on Tuesday.
Tressel, former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, Cavs General Manager Chris Grant and former Green bay Packers General Manager Ron Wolf were all at the practice facility in Berea for Tuesday morning's practice.
Head coach Pat Shurmur chatted with Tressel and Carr throughout practice. He said that it was no special occasion that brought the coaches to Berea, just that coaches like to visit other camps. Shurmur explained that he worked very closed with a couple of Tressel's former assistants.
"I've known him for a long time," Shurmur said of Tressel. They didn't talk strictly football, though.
"I shared a story with him," Shurmur said. "When I first got here, to town, I went to this restaurant and they didnt really recognize me. Someone in the kitchen said, 'It's the coach--out in the restaurant!"
"So the waitress came up to me embarrassed and said, 'Oh my gosh I didn't know you were here, it's nice to meet you, coach Tressel," Shurmur said, laughing.
When they did talk football, it was mostly about quarterback play, Shurmur said. "When you visit with coaches there's a natural wisdom that some of them have. It may not be obvious, but you learn things."
It's clear that the players weren't the only ones learning today in Berea.
Michigan, of course, was also represented with Carr, and Shurmur said that he also has a history with Michigan. "I was actually born on campus there, my dad was a student at the time," he said after practice. In addition to that, he said that Michigan recruited him out of high school. In the end, Shurmur chose Michigan State.
Shurmur said that by visiting camps, it's a great way as coaches to visit old friends.
"To have a nice day like this and to come out and watch us practice, I think it's fun for them."
Neither Tressel nor Carr talked to the media after practice.
