BEREA, Oh - The Browns first full day of training camp went off without a hitch today in Berea. The team worked thru a fast paced two hours and fifteen minutes. Head Coach Pat Shurmur was pleased with todays work saying, "I'm seeing a huge difference between this year and last year and I'm excited to keep working thru this".
Shurmur pointed out how "fast" he thought rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon played and was also pleased with the play of his "young defensive tackles"
Josh Gordon is a big fast wide receiver who was drafted in the second round of the NFL Supplemental draft, he was asked if he felt behind at all because of missing out on Rookie Mini-Camp.
Gordon said " As far as catching up to the younger guys I feel like I have caught up pretty well and I think I am learning the plays pretty fast".
Pat Shurmur was not the only one who liked what he saw out of Gordon, Joe Haden had lined up across from the rookie several times during practice today and said " He's really strong, thats the first thing you notice and he has no problems getting off the line on press coverages, I think just making all his routes look the same and he's going to be all right".
Todays practice was conducted in shoulder pads and shorts to which linebacker Scott Fujita, a veteran of many mini camps responded " It's like a country club out here without full pads on, This isn't like a Dick Vermeil or Bill Parcells training camp that's for sure"
Fujita was also asked about his feelings on the sale of the team which surfaced yesterday," I was surprised to get that news yesterday because we had all heard the rumors" but he also didn't feel it would be a distraction saying "As players you just have to have blinders on and not let that affect you on the day to day"
Maybe the biggest suprise during practice today was an appearence by Browns Owner Randy Lerner who walked onto the practice field with President Mike Holmgren. Lerner stayed to watch the team for the first thirty minutes or so before leaving.
The team will be back on the field tomorrow morning from 8:45-11:15 am and practice is open to the public.
