BEREA, Ohio - Day two of Browns training camp is under way in Berea. Beautiful weather and big crowds greeted the Browns Sunday for their first practice in full pads.
Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said it best today after another smooth practice." My favorite day of the year, other then gameday of course, is the first day of pads and I wasn't dissapointed. I thought there was good banging out there. When you watch the practice some of those guys haven't been in pads since last so it takes a minute to get their sea legs “
The themes for today's two hour and fifteen minute workout were running the football and third and long. Shurmur gave kudos to all four of his running backs today for how physical they were when they ran the football, pointing the bursts from both rookie Trent Richardson and Montario Hardesty who has come in to camp lighter and looks very quick.
Richardson expected to get knocked around in his first workout in full pads. Richardson said, "You don't get drafted with the first pick by the Cleveland Browns with all their history at running back and not expect to take a few shots"
Which is exactly what happened but linebacker Scott Fujita said "I feel sorry for anybody that tries to tackle that kid below the waist, I went after his legs once and he is very strong."
Richardson was explosive and thrived on the contact, constantly spinning off tackles and making pin point cuts on one run to the end zone as the crowd of better then three thousand went crazy.
Brandon Weeden looked sharp once again and is getting the reputation as a bit of a tape room rat. Weeden said he was at the Browns facility taking notes on his Saturday workout until 12:30am, only to have to report back to the facility five and a half hours later.
The one bad thrown Weeden made also was the play of the day in camp. Second year defensive back Eric Haag made a beautiful diving interception on a well thrown ball by the rookie in seven on sevens.
The Browns will be back tomorrow morning in full pads from 8:45-11:15. Practice is open to the public. Tuesday will be an off day for the team.
