The Browns were patiently waiting for the head coaching hires to be concluded before moving forward to begin interviewing and eventually hiring an Offensive Coordinator. Pat Shurmur called the plays, but the dual role of Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator was too much for him. So where does that leave the team now.? Two potential canadates are at the top of the teams list.
Mike Sherman was an assistant coach under then head coach and now Browns team President Mike Holmgren in Green Bay. Sherman eventually took over as head coach of the Packers when Holmgren left for Seattle. Sherman had a winning record in Green Bay and won five division titles as head coach.
Brad Childress is another name high on the Browns list. Childress was the Offensive Coordinator in Philadelphia when Pat Shurmur was there as Quarterbacks Coach and Tom Heckert was the teams general manager. Both canadates have solid resumes and are very well respected around the league. The Browns could also promote from within, but you can expect the interviews to begin very soon.
Updated Tonight at 9:00pm
Former Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress has emerged as the front runner for the Browns Offensive Coordinator position according to Jason LaCanfora of The NFL Report, who reported Thursday evening that Childress is the front runner for the Browns open position. LaCanfora said the Browns have been waiting on Childress and "Beleives the deal will get done". The hiring would make sense because of the connection mentioned above in Philadelphia. Ironically, Childress interviewed for the Browns head coaching position in 2005 to replace Butch Davis. Childress also happens to share the same agent as Shurmur and Browns President Mike Holmgren and Browns G.M. Tom Heckert.
