CLEVELAND - On Tuesday, officials from both the Cleveland Browns and FirstEnergy Corp. revealed the new name for Cleveland Browns Stadium-- FirstEnergy Stadium: Home of the Cleveland Browns.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and FirstEnergy CEO Tony Alexander made the official announcement shortly after 2 p.m.
However, rumors of the name change began on Monday, when a source claiming to be connected to the Wilson Football plant in Ada, Ohio told NewsChannel5 that the company made footballs for the Browns with the name “FirstEnergy Field at Cleveland Browns Stadium” on them.
NewsChannel5 weekend sports anchor Mike Cairns reached out to the Twitter community Monday evening asking them what nickname they’d like to give to the new stadium. Dozens of creative name suggestions flooded his newsfeed.
“How about “we finally got WiFi Stadium”. Or “my cell phone actually gets reception here field,” tweeted @BMWballsohard .
“Derek Anderson Field?” tweeted @KeithPotoczak .
“Brown Out Field. Fitting on so many levels,” tweeted @illstr8r .
And from those comments, Cairns selected his favorites and announced them in the 11 p.m. newscast Monday night as well as on Twitter.
“Some of my finalists tonight. The Lightbulb The Power House The Grid Battery Park The Lighthouse Brown Out Field The Shock Collar” tweeted @MikeCairns5 .
Comments were also posted on the WEWS Facebook page .
“How a bout the “maybe next year” stadium or…..or “ snowbelt stadium,” posted Marla Thomson.
“How about FES Up --- First Energy Stadium (for the Cleveland Browns)?" asked Camille Ziegenhagen.
More nicknames trickled in after the official announcement Tuesday.
“The shocker?” tweeted @th3flawl3ss1 .
“’The Grid’” tweeted @THE_CLOCKER .
