CLEVELAND - More than 17,000 fans took advantage to watch a free night to watch Browns practice at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The hot, muggy night was more of a backdrop for a bunch of stories.
The story of the day was that Browns cornerback Joe Haden had a positive drug test. It was reported by multiple sources and confirmed by NewsChannel 5 late in the afternoon. It was a no-win situation for head coach Pat Shurmur, owner Jimmy Haslam and Haden himself at the event.
Shurmur couldn't say anything even if he wanted to and Haden said, "It's a league matter, I can't comment on it."
According the reports, the drug that he may have tested positive for was Adderall, a drug commonly used for attention deficit disorder. The positive test will be evaluated again. I was told by a source that this story could take some time to play out, even well into the season.
The other big story of the day was running back Trent Richardson's knee. The rookie running back was sent to Florida to be evaluated by Dr. James Andrews, one of the world's leaders in sports-related injuries.
Richardson is scheduled to have minor surgery on his left knee. Richardson and Andrews have a history of working with each other since Richardson was in high school.
Haslam was at the family night workout. He will not be in Detroit for Friday night's first preseason game against the Lions. He has a previous engagement.
Haslam said he spent part of the weekend checking out Browns Stadium to see what improvements could be made. He said his team will hire the proper people to assess what they think the stadium needs in upgrades.
He also spent time talking to new season ticket holders. Most of the season ticket holders were impressed to see and meet the new owner. Haslam spent more than an hour taking pictures and signing autographs.
Hard to believe just two months ago, maybe just a handful of Steelers fans who knew him as a minority owner would think of asking for an autograph. This was his first real night as a rock star. Before, the most spotlight he would have ever received was as the older brother of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.
The last story was the fact that the Browns had a good workout under the lights at the stadium.
Starting quarterback Brandon Weeden received a warm welcome from the fans when he was introduced at the scrimmage.
"It's exciting as a player. We have had nothing but support from these fans, especially tonight. Tonight was a great turnout," Weeden said after the workout.
The Browns are off on Thursday. The team will bus to Detroit for Friday night's preseason game.
They are also off on Saturday.
