KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Quincy Diggs scored six of his 10 points in overtime, but it was Zeke Marshall's two free throws with 37 seconds left in the extra session that gave Akron a 69-66 victory over Western Michigan on Wednesday night.
Marshall, who scored 14 points, also made a jumper with 23 seconds left in regulation, giving the Zips (17-7, 9-1 Mid-American) a 59-58 lead and capping a 6-0 run. With 6 seconds left, Flenard Whitfield made one of two foul shots for the Broncos (10-14, 4-6) to force overtime.
After Marshall's free throws in overtime, the Broncos' Mike Douglas, who had 15 points, missed a game-tying jumper with 2 seconds left. Diggs grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit a free throw to seal the win.
Alex Abreu led Akron with 15 points. With the win, the Zips held onto sole possession of first place in the MAC's East Division.
