AKRON, Ohio - Nick Harney led Akron with 15 points as the Zips defeated Western Michigan 65-43 in each team's Mid-American Conference opener Wednesday night.
Alex Abreu, Pat Forsythe and Brian Walsh each added 12 points for Akron (10-4), while Demetrius Treadwell led the Zips with eight rebounds.
Austin Richie was the Broncos' lone scorer in double figures with 11 points.
Western Michigan's 43 points were the fewest allowed by Akron this year and the second fewest scored by the Broncos, two more than in their 73-41 loss to No. 3 Michigan on Dec. 4.
The Broncos (8-6) shot 32.7 percent (16 of 49), including just 4 of 14 3-pointers, and were outrebounded 41-30.
The Zips led 25-19 at halftime and opened the second half with a 13-2 run. At one point, the Broncos missed 10 straight field goals and went over 9 minutes between makes while falling into a 60-35 hole.
