MEMPHIS, Tenn. - UPDATE: Memphis police confirm ex-NBA player Lorenzen Wright dead, killed by gunshot wounds.

Memphis police have confirmed that a body found in wooded area is former NBA player Lorenzen Wright.

The Shelby County medical examiner's office reported Thursday that Wright died of a gunshot wound.

Family members had said Wednesday that police told them Wright's body had been found, but authorities wouldn't immediately confirm that.

Wright, a 34-year-old Memphis native, was last seen around midnight July 18. His family filed a missing person report with police on July 22.

He was the seventh overall pick drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1996 NBA draft. He played college basketball at the University of Memphis.

Wright played in the NBA for 13 years. He spent time with five different teams including finishing his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season. Over his career, he averaged 8 points and 6.4 rebounds in 778 games.

On Thursday, Cavs general manager Chris Grant released this statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are for Lorenzen Wright's family as they deal with these very tough and tragic circumstances. For those of us that worked with Lorenzen, we knew him as a very vibrant, friendly, caring, young human being. I spent a lot of time with Lorenzen in Atlanta, and then here again in Cleveland, and was very, very saddened to hear the news of his death. He will be missed by many."
