LeBron James will now go to the Miami Heat to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. He made his announcement during an hour-long show on ESPN Thursday night called “The Decision.”
ESPN had reported earlier in the day that inside sources indicated LeBron would, in fact, end up in Miami.
"When I woke up this morning, I knew it was the right decision... I know how loyal I am. One thing my mother told me is you have to do what's best for you and what makes you happy," LeBron said.
With three big players all under one roof, LeBron will take a salary hit, compared to what he made in Cleveland. Since Wade and Bosh have yet to sign contracts, waiting for LeBron’s decision, the exact amounts split between them is still unknown.
As Akron-born LeBron leaves the town that crowned him the King, but didn’t get him a ring, Cleveland’s future is uncertain. Where will this rank on the top Cleveland sports heartbreaks among The Fumble, The Drive, Red Right 88 and Art Modell’s move?
"It's been heavy on me. I know a lot of people look up to me and I know what I've done for the city of Cleveland," James said.
The Cavs released this statement after 10 p.m. Thursday:
"We believe in this team, this organization, this community, and what we will do to compete at the highest level. We believe in the new coach and leader we have in Byron Scott, and the world class basketball organization and positive and strong culture we've established. Dan Gilbert and our ownership group are firmly committed to reaching our goals and succeeding on the court and in the community, at the highest level.”
“Our fans stepped up and showed their support, to a degree unlike anywhere else. We are fortunate to have the support of the best fans in the NBA. That passion and dedication will be rewarded. We will work relentlessly to continue to build a team that will contend. A team that will win championships. We are all competitors and our one goal is to win, that and Dan Gilbert and our ownership team’s commitment and investment in this organization and community are constants that will not change."
Here is a statement issued by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson:
"Lebron James has brought so much to the City of Cleveland on and off the court and we thank him. Akron/Cleveland will always be his home and I wish him well with the next phase of his career. Though we will miss him in a CAVS uniform... we must remember that Cleveland is a great city today and will continue to be great in the future."
