CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Indians have traded starting pitcher to the St. Louis Cardinals as part of a three-team deal between the Indians, Cardinals and San Diego Padres, the team announced Saturday.
In the deal, Cleveland received minor league pitcher Corey Kluber from the Padres. Kluber, 24, has spent the entire season to date at in Double A, going 6-6 with a 3.45 ERA.
Westbrook was scheduled to start Saturday, but was scratched for rookie Josh Tomlin, who will make his second Major League start.
Like recent years, this year’s trading deadline has meant a flurry of trades for the Indians to dump salary in exchange for prospects. Westbrook is the latest Indian to be traded after the team already dealt Austin Kearns and Johnny Peralta.
