Police release dashcam video of Indians Shin-Soo Choo's OVI arrest

SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio - Sheffield Lake police have released dashcam video taken from a police cruiser of Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo getting arrested during an OVI stop on Monday.

Choo was arrested on an OVI charge after failing a field sobriety test, and a breathalyzer test later showed that he had a blood alcohol level of .201, more than twice the legal limit, according to a report from Sheffield Lake police.

In the video, Choo asked officers for directions to Avon Lake, where he lives. Officers initially told him where to go, but then pulled him over again after Choo was swerving on the road.

At that point, an officer asked Choo to get out of the car and performed a series of field sobriety tests.

As Choo attempted to walk a straight line, he stumbled several times.

The officer also asked Choo to touch his nose with his right finger, but Choo used his left hand. When asked to touch his nose using his right finger, Choo used his left hand.

The officer then placed Choo under arrest.

"I sincerely apologize to my family, teammates, fans and the Indians' organization for the attention stemming from this matter,” Choo said in a statement released by the Indians on Tuesday. “However I am hopeful that this incident will not be a distraction to the Indians organization while we remain focused on continuing to play winning baseball. Since this is a legal matter, I look forward to it being resolved within the court system as soon as possible.”

Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti released the following statement about the incident:

“We are aware of the incident with Shin-Soo Choo and have spoken to him about it. The Indians organization takes these issues very seriously and we are disappointed in the matter. We will continue to monitor the situation and we will not have any further comment at this time."

Choo is with the Indians in Oakland and played in Tuesday night’s game. He is scheduled to appear in Sheffield Lake Mayor’s Court on Thursday.

Choo is the second Indians outfielder to be arrested for drunken driving this year, as Austin Kearns was charged with a DUI in Kentucky in February.
