Indians closer Chris Perez, who had been looking forward to playing for team USA at the World Baseball Classic, will have to sit out.
Perez has a ubscapularis strain in right shoulder (last outing came on Feb 26). He will not throw for the next 7-10 days. Preez is expected to resume exhibition game activity in 3-to-4 weeks.
The Indians also gave updates on other injured players in the Goodyear, Arizona camp. Pitcher Frank Herrmann suffered a right elbow ligament sprain during last outing of Feb 25 at Oakland. The club and Herrmann are still in the process of gathering information for the most appropriate course of action. Frank is currently a non-participant in workouts and there is no timetable for his return.
Outfielder Michael Brantley suffered left arm laceration on Feb 25 at Oakland. He has resumed lower body strength and conditioning and cardiovascular training. Will commence gripping activities this weekend in preparation for returning to limited baseball activities early next week
Right handed pitcher Joe Smith who has abdominal issues pitched a simulated game yesterday, and is scheduled to throw batting practice tomorrow.
