GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Indians All-Star closer will be out 4 to 6 weeks, injured during his first spring training workout.
Closer Chris Perez suffered a strained left side muscle during his first bullpen session on Thursday.
This is now the second person injured in camp, after Friday’s announcement that center fielder Grady Sizemore strained his lower back and will not be ready to play on opening day.
According to Head Athletic Trainer Lonnie Soloff, the recovery time for Perez’s injury is the typical healing time for such a muscle injury.
Soloff hopes to have Perez in exhibition games towards the end of March, based on his response to treatment.
Perez has not been ruled out for opening day.
Should Perez not be ready for opening day, Vinnie Pestano, based on his performance last year, will most likely be Manager Manny Acta’s first choice for closer.
