SICILY, Italy -

Europe's highest active volcano, Mount Etna, erupted Tuesday night, sending plumes of ash and lava into the sky on the island of Sicily.

Eruptions are common. On occasion, Italian airliners alter their routes to avoid flying through ash clouds.

According to reports, Tuesday's eruption did not cause any interruption to air traffic at the nearest airport.
