CLEVELAND - The story behind Flag Day actually starts in 1885 when a school teacher placed an American flag on his desk and asked his students to write about the flag's significance.
After decades of informal observations to recognize Old Glory, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observation of Flag Day.
Thirty-three years after that, in 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act Of Congress designating the 14th day of June every year as National Flag Day.
