SALEM, OH -
Salem Police in Columbiana County said a man has turned himself in and has been charged after a fatal hit-skip accident involving a young child late Friday evening.

According to police, just after 9:20 p.m. a 9-year-old female was crossing the street on E. State Street near South Lundy avenue when a small black pick-up truck struck the child and fled the scene.

The child was transported to Salem Hospital, then lifeflighted to Akron Children's Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

After police recovered the vehicle, the suspected driver, 27-year-old Todd R. Roberts of Washingtonville, Ohio voluntarily came to the Salem Police Department around 5:05 p.m. Saturday upon request for a further investigative interview.

Following the interview, Mr. Roberts was processed for the charge of Failing to Stop after an Accident/Fatal, a Felony of the 3rd degree. He was then transported to the Columbiana County Jail pending an arraignment at the Columbiana County Municipal Court.

Mr. Thompson's 1998 Chevy S-10 truck alleged to be involved in the accident remains in the custody of the Salem Police Department. Further charges are to be reviewed by the Columbiana County Grand Jury.
