Ohio sees increase in mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus

DAYTON, Ohio - Health officials are warning about the risk of West Nile virus to Ohio residents after seeing a 460-percent increase in mosquitoes carrying the virus in pockets of the state.
The Ohio Department of Health says the number of mosquito samples testing positive for the sometimes-deadly virus at this point in the year went from 38 in 2011 to 213 this year. That's the highest number at this point since 2002.
The Dayton Daily News reports that 20 state agencies in 14 counties participate in the testing program. But health department officials stress that people all over the state should be aware of mosquitoes because of the rising numbers.
