Ohio reports 16 illnesses in meningitis outbreak

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio health officials have reported 16 meningitis cases linked to a larger outbreak of the illness and recalled steroid injections for back pain.
The Ohio Department of Health said Friday that the latest cases involve an 85-year-old Clermont County man and a 31-year-old Franklin County woman. Cases of rare fungal meningitis also have been reported in Crawford, Hamilton, Marion, Morrow, Warren and Union counties.
Those cases involve adults, and none have died.
Federal officials report more than 400 illnesses and 29 deaths in the outbreak linked to a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts called the New England Compounding Center. It recalled its products.
Officials say dozens of Ohio facilities received the pharmacy's products while four clinics in Ohio received the potentially contaminated steroids.
Officials say fungal meningitis cannot be spread person-to-person.
