WEIRTON, W.Va. - Brooke County police say an Ohio man trying to retrieve a refrigerator that had fallen out of his truck was killed when a drunken driver hit him.
Robert O'Neal of Richmond died Monday night on West Virginia Route 2 near the Veterans Bridge.
Brooke County sheriff's deputies identified the driver accused of hitting O'Neal as Ronald C. Bottorf III.
Bottorf was charged with driving under the influence. His age and hometown weren't immediately available.
Cpl. Rich Arthur said that witnesses saw the refrigerator fall into the highway and told police O'Neal turned around and came back.
They told police he crossed several lanes of the dark, heavily traveled road before he was struck.
