CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is celebrating its first sifaka birth.

The rare animals are large lemurs with powerful legs they use to jump from tree to tree, sleeping in treetops at night to avoid predators. The zoo says there are only 54 of the animals known to exist, and the zoo has a family of three.

The male sifaka was born Aug. 3 to parents that have been in Cincinnati since April of last year.

The babies are born fully furred and with their eyes open. They cling to their mothers' chest for the first few weeks.

Zoo officials say the family is doing well and is now on display.
