CINCINNATI - A charter school near Cincinnati will start paying its students this week for showing up to class and being productive throughout the day.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer , students at Dohm Community High School who are on time everyday, avoid trouble and show they’re working in class will get a Visa gift card at the end of each week. Seniors will be paid $25 and underclassmen will get $10. An extra $5 will be put in a savings account they can redeem after they graduate.

The school's principal Ramone Davenport told the newspaper the goal of the new incentives is to reduce dropouts, improve attendance and keep students off the street.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported the program will cost about $40,000 this school year, but Principal Davenport said it’s worth it if it means students will graduate.

Last year, the graduation rate at the school was 14 percent.
