TOLEDO, Ohio - A fight between two students in a mostly empty dormitory at the University of Toledo left one dead and the other injured, police said Thursday.

Both were stabbed in what authorities said was not a random attack. Police do not believe anyone else was involved.

The two men, who knew each other, got into a fight Wednesday night in a stairwell at the dormitory where they were staying during the school's holiday break, authorities said.

Police and university officials stressed that the violence was an isolated incident and that the campus was safe.

"There's nothing we could have done to prevent this," said Jeff Newton, the university's police chief.

The student who was injured, Erik Littleton, 19, of Detroit, was found with several stab wounds outside the International House on campus, police said.

Josiah Galat, 20, of Mansfield, was found about 10 minutes later and was pronounced dead at the scene, the university said.

No charges have been filed.

Ten students, including four student workers along with four staff members, were staying at the dormitory over the break.

Police said they sent out an alert to students, faculty and staff advising them there was a dangerous situation and to stay away from the dormitory.

Police held a news conference Thursday morning and posted video on the university's website:
