Report: 'Profound' changes coming to Facebook; current tweaks just the beginning

CLEVELAND - If the recent changes to Facebook have you up in arms, be warned—You ain’t seen nothing yet.

A new report from the technology blog Mashable says that Facebook is debuting significant changes to its platform on Thursday at the company’s f8 conference.

The changes will be some of the most profound in the company’s history, and are being made in an effort to change the way that people connect and interact on the web, according to the report.

“The Facebook you know and (don’t) love will be forever transformed,” Mashable Editor at Large Ben Parr wrote. “The news that will come out of Facebook during the next few weeks will be the biggest things to come out of the company since the launch of the Facebook Platform.

The specific changes are not yet clear, as Facebook has kept the details closely guarded. But judging by the Mashable report, the differences will feel more like a transformation opposed to the tweaks in design that Facebook has made over the years.

Facebook is already one of the most visited websites in the world, and is worth billions of dollars, so users are asking, “Why mess with a good thing?”

Well, according to the Mashable report, Facebook’s aim is to win back some of its users who have grown cold toward the social platform, but still use it for the simple reason that all of their friends are there.

By adding new features and functions, Facebook's goal is to "enhance the emotional connection its users have to each other through Facebook."

“Facebook’s goal is to become the social layer that supports, powers and connects every single piece of the web, no matter who or what it is or where it lives,” Parr wrote.
