Google Fiber sets Kansas City launch date

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - We now know when the highly-anticipated Google Fiber network will arrive in Kansas City.

Google Fiber will come to Kansas City on July 26, the company said in a YouTube video posted Wednesday and on a new Google Fiber website.

“We appreciate your help and support,” the Internet conglomerate said in the video’s description, “and we feel privileged to be part of the Kansas City community.”

It's been more than a year since Google announced they would launch the Fiber network in Kansas City, Kan . It was later announced the network would be available in Kansas City, Mo., as well.

"Our goal is to deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today," Google vice president of Access Services Milo Medin said last year in a statement on their website announcing the selection of Kansas City, Kan., as the launch city.

Google announced the Fiber for Communities initiative in February 2010. They extended the invitation to any community in the country that wanted faster broadband Internet.

Over 1,100 communities across the country, including 22 in Kansas and 27 in Missouri responded to Google, and the Kansas City metro came out on top.

"In selecting a city,” Medin said in last year’s statement, “our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City.”

The company says an announcement will be made on July 26 with further details. They encourage those interested to sign up for their mailing list on http://google.com/fiber .
