AKRON, Ohio - Four people in defense of Jimmy Dimora are testifying on his behalf, including a former Bedford mayor, a former police officer, a former neighbor and former Bedford councilman.
Prosecutors also were expected to call people to speak against the former commissioner.
As the day wore on, Dimora could be seen on the media room video feed as stifling a yawn.
U.S. District Court Judge Sara Lioi was still hearing arguments about restitution amounts approaching 5 p.m. It was not clear how long the sentencing hearing would go on Monday.
The former Cuyahoga County commissioner wore an orange prison uniform and glasses when he arrived to court, brought in by wheelchair into a basement entrance.
When he entered the courtroom, he was out of the wheelchair, but used a walker to get to the defense table.
By late afternoon, Dimora had removed his glasses, and occasionally rubbed his eyes and face.
Most of the day Dimora appeared to be giving his full attention to the haggling by defense attorneys and prosecutors.
He sat forward with his elbows on the table. Sometimes he put his chin in his hand. Other times he sat back with his arms crossed in front. Once in awhile, he would sit back, hands at his sides, and appear to look straight ahead.
The former political powerhouse faces 22 years in federal prison for guilty convictions on 32 counts of bribery, racketeering, obstruction and other charges.
