AKRON, Ohio - Former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora is days away from being sentenced on 31 counts of corruption and racketeering charges.
Dozens of family, friends, neighbors and local officials have written letters to U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi, asking her for leniency when she sentences Dimora on July 30 at 9:30 a.m. in Akron Federal Court.
Dimora's defense lawyer, William Whitaker, filed a 55 page document, which includes 44 typed or handwritten letters. All describe Dimora as a kind, caring, loving, strong, respectful individual and dedicated public servant. They also ask Judge Lioi to give Dimora the lowest possible sentence.
Dimora's wife of 32 years even wrote a two-page letter asking for the judge's compassion as she makes her decision.
"He cared for the citizens of Cuyahoga County more than he cared about himself… Jim always puts other people's feelings and troubles before his own… As you know, I sat through Jim's trial and listened to many, many stories… I wish you would have had the opportunity to hear all the good stories and all the good things Jim Dimora has done," wrote Lori Dimora.
Dimora's three children described him as a wonderful father and role model.
"I was fortunate enough to have a father guide me and keep me on the right track. He has helped me grow as an individual and to strive for my best. My father raised me to see the good in everybody. As I continue to grow as an individual, I can only hope to turn out as caring, trusting, loving, respectful and family-oriented as my father… I ask for you to give my father the lowest sentence possible so that he will be able to one day play a role in my future children's life. Please do not deprive us of having such a great, loving and wonderful man around everyday to share in our triumphs and sorrows," wrote Joe Dimora, Jimmy's middle son.
"My fondest memories I have of my father are my father-daughter dances when I was a member of the girl scouts," wrote Lisa Dimora, Jimmy's daughter.
"I know I would not be half the person I am today without his guidance, love, compassion and drive that he provided me throughout my life and continues to give me today… My only wish is for you to allow my father to continue to be present and participate in future events of my life, such as my wedding, birthdays, anniversaries and career achievements," wrote Anthony Dimora, Jimmy's eldest son.
Dimora faces up to 26 years in prison. Prosecutors have asked for a sentence of at least 22 years.
