AKRON, Ohio - Convicted former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora may arrive at his sentencing hearing next week confined to a wheelchair and claiming life-threatening health issues.
In a sentencing memorandum filed by defense attorneys, Dimora is portrayed as having "serious and life threatening" health afflictions.
His lawyer describe their client as now "relying on a walker and, more recently, the use of wheelchair" following a fall in prison .
Among Dimora's medical ailments are chronic back pain, deterioration of the meniscus in his right knee, hypertension, phlebitis and a "dark mass" behind his tonsils that could be cancerous.
Dimora's lawyers are asking that his sentence be reduced because of advanced age, along with severe and unique physical conditions.
Dimora is scheduled to be sentenced July 30 where prosecutors will ask that Dimora serve more than 22 years in federal prison on corruption charges .
