CLEVELAND - Sammy Davis, Jr. was an entertainer’s entertainer. Sammy did it all; he sang, danced, told jokes, did impressions and more.
Sammy was in our WEWS studios as a Live On Five guest on June 13, 1989 promoting his book "Why Me? The Sammy Davis, Jr. Story."
Wilma Smith interviewed the legendary showman for seven minutes. Although Wilma begins talking about his 60 years in show business, she doesn’t do the fawning celebrity interview rather she asked Sammy about his troubled side of addictions and other demons.
Sammy is very forthcoming about giving his all to make people happy, while during most of his life being a very unhappy man. He tells Wilma about his inability during those years to make a relationship commitment, and obsessions with drugs and sex. It's a time of his life he was happy was behind him.
Shifting gears, he talks to Wilma about his line of food products as well as his company, SDJ (Sammy Davis Jr.), which was based in Cleveland.
If you watch closely, you can see cigarette smoke rising near Sammy during some of the interview.
Sammy Davis Jr. would die from throat cancer 11 months after this interview May 16, 1990.
This 1989 Live On Five broadcast was jam-packed with celebrities.
After the commercial break, WEWS sportscaster Nev Chandler talks with boxing promoter Don King and boxer Mike Tyson from King’s training facility in Orwell, Ohio. Tyson and King invite Nev to spar with the champ, but I'll save that segment for another edition of the Video Vault.
