Arlene Holmes, a San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes' mother, is claiming ABC News was wrong when it reported that her initial statement to a reporter was, "you have the right person," when referencing her son.

According to ABC News, who is sticking by its report, Holmes had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities.

ABC News said she immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person,” the ABC News claims Holmes said. “I need to call the police,” she added. “I need to fly out to Colorado.”

ABC News released this statement after Arlene Holmes held a press conference through her lawyer:

[ABC News reporter Matthew] Mosk said today that he awoke Arlene Holmes and informed her that a man, he believed was her son had been arrested in Aurora and asked to confirm their relationship.

"You have to tell me what happened… You have to tell me what happened," the woman on the phone said, according to Mosk . Mosk said he told her that ABC News had learned the 24-year-old had been identified by police as the lone suspect in the mass killing in Aurora, Colo and that the details of the events were still taking shape.

"You have the right person," was her response, he said. "I need to call the police. I need to fly to Colorado."

Just prior to the press conference, Damiani contacted ABC News to determine whether there existed a recording of the pre-dawn conversation between Mosk and her client, according to Mosk .

One hour after learning there was no audio recording, Damiani held the conference and read Arlene Holmes' statement.

The incident began when a gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver at a midnight opening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

Moviegoers didn't know what was happening and some thought the attack was part of the show. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke at the front of the theater near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd.

"I told my friend `we've got to get out of here,' but then he shot people trying to go out the exits," Jennifer Seeger told NBC's "Today."

She said the shooter made his way up the aisle, firing as he went, saying nothing.

Federal law enforcement officials identified the suspect as James Holmes, a 24-year-old American. Holmes is in police custody, and the FBI says there is no indication that incident is tied to any terrorist groups.
