TOPEKA, Kan. - Police in the Kansas city of Topeka say two of their officers shot outside a grocery store have died at a hospital.
They say the 22-year-old male suspect in Sunday's shooting remains at large and is believed to be still armed.
The officers were shot responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle near the store. They have been identified as 50-year-old Cpl. David Gogian and 29-year-old Officer Jeff Atherly.
Police officials announced the news of the officers' deaths Sunday night as a small crowd gathered nearby for a candlelight vigil outside police headquarters.
Gogian had been with the department since September 2004 and Atherly since April 2011.
Police found the reported vehicle outside a house 10 blocks from the store. They searched the house but didn't find the suspect.
