JOLIET, Ill. - Drew Peterson shocked an Illinois courtroom during his sentencing hearing in the death of his third wife, shouting "I did not kill Kathleen!"

Someone in the court audience responded by shouting back, "Yes, you did." That person was then removed from the Joliet courtroom on Thursday afternoon.

Peterson's outburst came as Will County Judge Edward Burmila was preparing to sentence him for murdering Kathleen Savio. The 59-year-old former Bolingbrook police officer faces between 20 and 60 years in prison.

Earlier Thursday, the judge denied a request for Peterson to have a new trial. Peterson's current legal team had argued for a new trial on grounds his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the case.

Savio's body was found in a dry bathtub with a gash on her head in 2004.
